Kim Tae-ho, CEO of Belift Lab and COO of HYBE, recently responded to allegations that ILLIT Plagiarizing NewJeans and claims that HYBE engaged in forced album sales practices.
During a session of the Comprehensive National Assembly Inspection of the Culture, Sports, and Tourism Committee on October 24, 2024, Kim addressed the ongoing controversies surrounding HYBE and Belift Lab.
Former ADOR CEO Min Hee-jin has accused HYBE of initiating audits against her after she raised concerns about ILLIT’s alleged copying of NewJeans. She asserts that this conflict arose as part of HYBE’s attempts to assert control over management.
In response, Belift Lab has consistently denied any wrongdoing regarding plagiarism and has filed both criminal and civil lawsuits against Min Hee-jin for obstruction of business and defamation. Kim reaffirmed the company’s stance, stating, “We have filed lawsuits and are awaiting the court’s ruling,” and pledged to present evidence to clarify the allegations in court.
Additionally, Kim refuted claims that HYBE manipulated album sales figures through coercive practices. Representative Min Hyung-bae questioned whether HYBE had employed return conditions on album sales or incentivized purchases through fan events. Kim responded, “There are no return conditions,” though he acknowledged that internal audits were conducted due to specific complaints. He clarified that only a minimal percentage of albums sold in 2023 were eligible for returns and insisted that the company never implemented a return policy.
Min cited an email dated January 4, 2024, referencing a “planned return project,” which raised further suspicions about HYBE’s sales practices. Kim clarified, “Returns processed for albums sold in 2023 were a one-time event in January, and we’ve taken steps to ensure this won’t happen again.”
He emphasized that any prior practices were not company policy but rather decisions made by individual staff members. To prevent future issues, guidelines have been established, and Kim assured that these practices did not disrupt the market or significantly affect sales.
With various controversies surrounding HYBE in recent months, Kim concluded by acknowledging the toll these events have taken on the public and fans. He stated, “We sincerely apologize for the fatigue caused and are committed to ensuring that our company fulfills its fundamental mission of bringing joy to fans. We recognize that there have been regrettable aspects this year and are dedicated to preventing similar issues in the future.”
