Netflix has officially announced the release date for The most anticipated kdrama, Squid Game Season 3: the final episodes will be available starting June 27, 2025.
During the Next on Netflix 2025 event, a never-before-seen scene was unveiled, hinting at a shocking confrontation between two close characters and an even more brutal new game mechanic.
Geum-ja and Yong-sik: A duo broken by gambling

Among the notable characters in Season 2 are Jang Geum-ja (played by Kang Ae-sim) and her son Park Yong-sik (Yang Dong-geun), who entered the games together in the hopes of clearing Yong-sik’s gambling debts. Despite difficult challenges, both managed to survive until Season 3.
But in the scene shown by Netflix, their bond is put to the test. We see the remaining players in an empty room, facing a huge machine filled with red and blue balls. Each player must turn the handle to obtain one. Depending on the color, they are divided into two opposing camps.
Unfortunately, Geum-ja and Yong-sik receive different colored balls, meaning they’ll likely have to face off against each other in the next round. Given that games often end with one participant dying, it’s likely one of them won’t survive.
Geum-ja nevertheless tries to reassure her son: “Don’t worry, we don’t even know what the game is yet.”
But in the world of Squid Game, the outcome is rarely happy. In a recent interview, actress Kang Ae-sim (Geum-ja) revealed that her filming for seasons 2 and 3 combined lasted only six months, while other actors filmed for nearly a year.
This discrepancy has led many fans to speculate that Geum-ja could die relatively early in season 3, especially now that she’s directly opposed to her own son. This hypothesis is reinforced by the tragic logic of the series, where family ties are often brutally tested.
Seong Gi-hun: A Return Marked by Pain
The scene ends with Seong Gi-hun (Lee Jung-jae), visibly weakened and still wearing his green tracksuit, stained with the blood of his friend Park Jung-bae, killed by the Front Man in the season 2 finale. Gi-hun in turn receives a red ball and joins one of the camps.
Despite his distress, he seems ready to continue his mission: to end the games from within, whatever the cost.
An Even More Ruthless Game Mechanic
This new random selection system replaces the old voting system between events, which allowed participants to choose whether or not they wished to continue. Now, chance decides, regardless of previous choices or existing alliances.
This mechanic has the direct effect of separating close players, or even forcing them to clash, intensifying the emotional and strategic tension. Alliances are called into question, and former companions could well become adversaries.
What the first images of Season 3 reveal

Netflix also released several never-before-seen images from Season 3:
- Gi-hun is chained to a bed, suggesting he’s being held against his will before rejoining the games.
- Kang No-eul (Park Gyu-young) appears outside the games, suggesting she could play a role in the investigation or the resistance.
- Players gather around a coffin, perhaps a sign that they’re beginning to uncover what’s really going on behind the scenes.
- The Front Man, without his mask, is shown in a colorful setting, looking dejected, suggesting internal conflicts or a change of heart.
A final season full of tension
The third season of Squid Game will mark the end of Ji-hoon’s story and the conclusion of the game’s main story. With the introduction of new rules, the threat of encountering loved ones, and some players’ growing desire to end the system, this season is expected to be the most exciting in the series.
Squid Game season 3 will be available on Netflix starting June 27, 2025.
