Rosé’s VMAs Victory Raises Racism Concerns

On September 8, BLACKPINK’s Rosé attended the 2019 Video Music Awards (VMAs) held at UBS Arena in New York. Out of eight nominations, Rosé won “Song of the Year” for her song “APT,” a collaboration with Bruno Mars. While fans celebrated this historic win, some captured unexpected moments that quickly gained widespread attention.

The viral video drew attention for an awkward moment. During the announcement of her win for “Song of the Year,” Rosé attempted to hug the producer and the artist next to her, but her gesture was ignored.

On the other hand, netizens noted the different reactions of the audience and artists attending the ceremony between Ariana Grande’s and Rosé’s win announcements, noting that the artists did not stop at the announcement of her name, unlike Ariana Grande.

The audience’s behavior sparked widespread controversy and accusations of anti-Asian discrimination. This incident was not the first of its kind, as several K-pop groups, including BTS and Stray Kids, have faced similar situations. Fans considered it inhumane treatment.

A netizen on X (formerly Twitter) shared Rosé’s embarrassing moment and the fans’ reactions to her award win. The post quickly went viral, with over a million views and thousands of quotes. The user wrote, “I don’t know what’s funnier, the indifferent fans or her leaning over him for a hug that never came”

Netizens’ reactions were mixed, with some commenting:

  • This is in contrast to Ariana’s standing ovation. So embarrassing.
  • This was Ariana’s first award show appearance in a long time, and she won. Of course, everyone, even their moms, would have stood up for her. She’s a legend in every sense of the word.
  • And when that happens to your favorite person, you’re going to scream xenophobia and racism toward Asians, you hypocrites.
  • Some people might not like that team, but they can’t lie to themselves and say they didn’t stand up because it doesn’t matter to them, when the truth is they’re racists, xenophobes, and don’t like giving awards to non-Americans 100%. This is so obvious and so sad.
  • At the end of the day, without Bruno, no one cares.
  • “They tried to rig the game, but they can’t fake influence.” – Kendrick Lamar
  • This is the first time in history that SOTY hasn’t received a standing ovation This is so embarrassing
