New Jeans Wins Lawsuit Against Sexually Harassing YouTuber… Court Orders Payment of 29 Million Won.
The group New Jeans has won a lawsuit against a YouTuber who sexually harassed them. According to legal sources on the 11th, the 13th Civil Division of the Seoul Western District Court (Judge Lee Ah-young) partially ruled in favor of the plaintiff in a 100 million won damages lawsuit filed by the New Jeans members against YouTuber Shin in June. The court ordered Minzy, Hani, and Daniel to pay 5 million won each, and Haerin and Haein 7 million won each.
Shin is accused of producing approximately 20 videos sexually harassing the New Jeans members while operating two YouTube channels between April and May of last year. He is also accused of posting malicious comments sexually harassing the members, who were minors. ADVERTISEMENT
Meanwhile, on May 17th, the 25-2 Civil Division of the Seoul High Court (Presiding Judges Hwang Byung-ha, Jeong Jong-gwan, and Lee Gyun-yong) dismissed the appeal filed by the five members of New Jeans against the injunction prohibiting independent activities. In April, the 50th Civil Division of the Seoul Central District Court (Presiding Judge Kim Sang-hoon) upheld Adore’s application for an injunction to “preserve the agency’s status and prohibit the signing of advertising contracts,” refusing to accept the members’ objection. As a result, the New Jeans members are prohibited from engaging in entertainment activities or advertising contracts without Adore’s consent.
On April 29th, the court also accepted Adore’s indirect compulsory motion against New Jeans, ordering each member to pay Adore 1 billion won per violation if New Jeans engages in independent activities without Adore’s prior approval.
The court gave Adore and New Jeans time to reach an agreement before the ruling. The third hearing for the main lawsuit seeking to confirm the validity of Adore and New Jeans’ exclusive contract will be held on the 14th.
