For context, ILLIT is the third girl group to debut under HYBE, the label behind BTS, following Le Sserafim from Source Music in May 2022 and NewJeans from ADOR in July of the same year. The members of ILLIT are all around the same age, with most born in 2004, similar to NewJeans.
The group was formed through R U Next?, a survival show that aired in September 2023, where over 20 K-pop trainees competed to debut as a girl group.
ILLIT was formed as a collaboration between HYBE and JTBC and was previously known as ILL-IT. They are managed by HYBE’s sub-label, Belift Lab. The name “ILLIT” is a blend of “I’ll” and “it,” signifying that you have the potential to become anything if you have the will.
The girls made their debut on March 25, 2024, with their mini-album “SUPER REAL ME,” which features five tracks: “My World,” “Magnetic,” “Midnight Fiction,” and “Lucky Girl Syndrome.”
In a March 2024 interview with Elle, Iroha expressed her desire for ILLIT to make a meaningful impact with their music. She stated, “I want to make everyone feel that enjoying music is more enjoyable than anything else in the world. I recommend listening to ‘Lucky Girl Syndrome’ when you want to lift your spirits and ‘Midnight Fiction’ at dawn or on your way home from work.”
Originally a six-member group, ILLIT became a quintet when former member Youngseo left prior to their debut in January 2024. “After in-depth discussions about future activities, Belift Lab and Youngseo mutually agreed to terminate the exclusive contract,” the agency announced on Weverse on January 7, 2024. “ILLIT will debut as a five-member group, and we are committed to fully supporting their debut and subsequent activities. This decision was made after careful consideration and honoring the artist’s wishes. We kindly ask for no unwarranted speculations or misunderstandings.”
