YG Entertainment announced on September 18 that BLACKPINK had been appointed United Nations Ambassador for the SDGs (Sustainable Development Goals) for the first time as an Asian artist.
The United Nations SDGs are the overarching goals of the international community that have been set by the United Nations. It includes universal human issues like poverty and disease to global, environmental, economic and social issues.
It has 17 main objectives and 169 detailed objectives and it is used as a global standard for sustainable management.
After a rigorous selection process, BLACKPINK was selected as the PR Ambassador. They received a letter signed by UN Secretary-General Antonio Guterres, and they were delighted to deeply sympathize with the UN’s SDG goal of bringing positive change to the world.
Regarding their nomination, BLACKPINK said, :
It is an honor to be part of the journey to a better world. With BLINKs, we want to inform the world about the importance of the SDGs and help solve the problems we face.
The UN list of ambassadors for the SDGs currently consists of different heads of state, such as prime ministers, presidents and queens. Apart from this, world leaders like world class artists are included in the line of ambassadors.
BLACKPINK will conduct activities to raise awareness of the importance of achieving the United Nations SDGs and strengthen their participation.
With their powerful global influence, BLACKPINK takes the lead in various social contribution activities such as COP26 or the United Nations Conference of the Parties Ambassador on Climate Change. They will also participate in various public interest campaigns and donations for forest fire recovery
In February, BLACKPINK was appointed UN climate change public relations ambassador. They have been named advocates of awareness for a global campaign against climate change issues.
BLACKPINK understood the importance of their newly acquired position, and they also urged the BLINKs to join the cause.
