Actor Choi Jung-won, former member of the K-pop duo UN, is facing a serious legal case. On August 16, Seoul’s Jungbu Police filed a complaint against actor Choi Jung-won after he went to his ex-girlfriend’s house, A, and displayed threatening behavior.
The Seoul Central District Court issued an immediate injunction banning contact, requesting immediate protective measures from authorities due to the seriousness of the situation.
Choi Jung-won is therefore prohibited from approaching A within 100 meters and is prohibited from any contact via messages or electronic networks. Failure to comply could result in him facing up to one year in prison or a fine of €7,450 (KRW 10 million).
According to Dispatch, the actor allegedly sent several threatening messages to his ex-girlfriend after the their breakup. These included phrases like, “One of us has to die for this to stop” and “You die, I die.” However, Choi Jung-won claims that his comments were misinterpreted and that he had no intention of directly threatening A.
This case comes at a time when the actor has already been criticized for his behavior. In 2023, he was involved in a lawsuit related to an extramarital affair with a married woman and took legal action for defamation. These past events are now fueling the scrutiny of his behavior.
While authorities are still investigating the exact scope of Choi Jung Won’s actions, given the seriousness of the situation, many netizens are concerned for the victim’s safety. The actor insists that his reference to self-harm was misinterpreted and denies any malicious intent to harm his ex-girlfriend.
The police are continuing their investigation to determine the exact extent of Choi Jung-won’s actions. Many online users are expressing concern for the victim’s safety and the seriousness of the situation. For his part, the actor continues to deny any malicious intent and insists that his references to self-harm were misunderstood.
This situation also highlights the growing attention paid to harassment and personal safety laws in South Korea. The strict measures in place aim to protect victims from repeated threats and harassment, reflecting the authorities’ vigilance in addressing this type of behavior.
Choi Jung Won shared a long statement on social media on August 20. Below, you can read the entire statement:
Hello, this is Choi Jung Won.
The report released yesterday was about a personal conflict between my girlfriend and me, and it was essentially a minor quarrel that escalated into a misunderstanding.
In the heat of the moment, there was room for misinterpretation, and as a result, the situation was reported in a way that did not reflect the facts. I deeply regret that.
The phrase “my girlfriend’s revelation,” which appeared in some reports, also comes from misunderstanding and does not match the facts.
The claim that I threatened her with a weapon or that I engaged in stalking is completely false. Both my girlfriend and I firmly deny those allegations. I plan to take strong action against such false information.
I sincerely apologize again that my personal life caused misunderstanding and that it led to troubling news. From now on, I will act with greater caution and with responsibility.
I am sorry.
