Indirect ads for non-creative and exaggerated Korean dramas, or PPL , have become a dilemma for K content. It’s an ordeal chosen to cover exorbitant production costs, even if it upsets viewers. However, the situation has changed with the advent of global OTTs (streaming platforms like Netflix, ViKi…) that guarantee a “PPL-free” production environment. Users do not want to see ads while subscribing for a fee. Let’s have a look at K-netizens’ opinions about PPL.

1. I don’t understand why they couldn’t combine PPL in more reasonable ways…or at least make it fun to watch.
2. Viewers don’t mind PPL if it’s done normally so as not to distract from what’s going on on screen… We can’t just stand randomly like PPL when characters are there for a moment of high tension but suddenly they bring out a cup of ramen.. or When they open the fridge and there are 200 cans of a certain brand…stop it. Or when there’s a really cool chase scene and a Lamborghini just pops out of nowhere. PPL can be normal if the characters are taken into account, such as if the character works in the fashion industry, so they only wear a certain brand. Unfortunately, this was done by force so that viewers could only turn to Netflix to avoid all of these things.
3. I’m so sick and tired of characters randomly putting on makeup or eating things in the middle of a drama. It’s disgusting.
4. The law should start regulating these things better. Sometimes I can’t tell if I’m watching a drama or some ad parody.
5. I can’t stand that multi-balm product that’s in every drama these days. They rub it all over their faces and necks and then on their lips, very dirty..
6. All the random scenes of characters wearing make-up, and the heroines only eating fried chicken… All this PPL is not only embarrassing but super annoying. Do the producers even know that PPL forced such viewers to change the channel? .
7. I just want brands to know that you’re basically killing your image if you force your products on screen like that.
8. The way PPL is done these days is proof that producers consider viewers to be fools. Don’t worry about viewer ratings if you have a well-produced drama film. The ratings will take care of themselves.
9. It’s too much ~~~
10. They can cut back on how much celebrities are paid per episode and invest that in production expenses. No one should charge 100 million won per episode.
11. Wait a minute ㅋㅋㅋㅋㅋ The drama producers definitely don’t think the only reason a Netflix drama can do better than them is because their dramas have a lot of PPL??? ㅋㅋㅋㅋㅋㅋㅋㅋㅋ They have a long way to go if that’s the case ㅋㅋㅋㅋ
12. The King’ is the most underrated when it comes to dramas that failed due to PPL ㅋㅋㅋㅋ putting a chapstick in the middle of a secret investigation, long-running explanations for the products~ I couldn’t stand every PPL in it. Why don’t producers realize how bad this stuff is???
