RM Sparks Controversy Over Grammys as Rosé Gets Nominations

Recently, BTS leader RM appeared in a live broadcast on Weverse, where he talked about the preparations the group is making for their comeback scheduled for next March, and he also mentioned the Grammys Awards.

Specifically, RM said that the Grammys are not the group’s goal, and that they make music for their fans, not for nominations or winning awards: “As for the Grammys… it’s not something we can get just because we want it. So, instead of chasing something, I think we should quietly keep doing what we do. Anyway, the new song is really amazing.”

Although RM’s statements received positive reactions from ARMY, some netizens accused him of hypocrisy, especially since BTS had focused on winning the award by releasing songs tailored to the Western market, like Dynamite and Butter, yet failed to win despite receiving more than five nominations in major categories, including Best Pop Duo/Group Performance in 2021, where Dynamite competed against Rain On Me by Lady Gaga and Ariana Grande with reportedly high chances of winning, which sparked accusations of racial bias against the ceremony.

In 2025, with many successful solo releases from the members, expectations were high for new nominations, especially with RM’s album Right Place, Wrong Person, which received critical acclaim but was not nominated due to the “genre ambiguity” (Hip Hop/Electronic/Korean).

RM’s statement coincided with BLACKPINK member Rosé being nominated in three major categories for her collaborative song APT with Bruno Mars, which fueled claims of jealousy from netizens. However, RM’s statement itself came after waves of criticism toward the ceremony, at a time when controversy over the Grammys’ credibility was growing, including accusations of manipulation by former Recording Academy president Craig T. Kallman, who said the awards are “rigged” in a November 2025 NBC interview.

Some netizens criticized RM’s statements about the Grammys and accused him of hypocrisy and lying, saying: “This whole group is fake They got Grammy nominations last year, this year, and will do so in the future. @RecordingAcad never nominate them again.”

Meanwhile, fans defended his statements, emphasizing that RM meant the group’s upcoming album would be for fans only, not chasing numbers or nominations: “As an artist, I would be prouder if I could sell out all the tickets in stadiums in minutes and have real fans come see me in person, rather than saying I got multiple awards from a ceremony with no real standards that lets a bunch of random people decide who wins.”
